Our greatest asset is our employees. Our employee value proposition is “
Shared Energy, Shared Growth”. This reflects our commitment that our company and our employees grow together, by using our shared skills, expertise and leadership.
Listed below is a sampling of our commitment to our employees and what life at Direct Energy can mean for you.
Awards
Our programs and people have won numerous awards for employee flexibility, diversity, business performance and corporate citizenry on a local, national and global basis.
Benefits
We offer a generous benefits package, which includes extended health, dental and vision coverage for employees and their dependents, with flex options and supplemental programs. Our benefits also include life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability and a pension plan. In addition, employees may be eligible for an annual incentive bonus plan and/or participate in the company share program.
Communications
Communication is an important part of ensuring our employees feel a part of our family and have the knowledge and insights to feel connected to the energy & services sector. That’s why we take the time to share the latest news about Direct Energy, our parent company Centrica, and our industry with our employees.
CEO updates, business strategy, financial results, product launches, industry news, people celebrations, community outreach events, operational bulletins, employee programs, benefits, discounts, health & wellness – you name it, we share it. We use many channels to get the message out – team meetings, teleconferences, intranet/internet, newsletters, emails and more. Our commitment is that our employees have access to a wide range of information to help them see beyond their own immediate goals.
Corporate Responsibility
Operating responsibly is our priority. Our vision is to be a leader in identifying, managing, and championing corporate responsibility issues – like managing our impact on the environment and helping others do the same, playing a role alongside government and the public to help ensure that vulnerable customers can access the energy they need and manage their energy costs, offering our customers affordable, reliable and competitively priced products and services, and by providing an enriching employee experience with competitive compensation and benefits, training and career development opportunities and support for work/life balance initiatives.
We believe we have a responsibility to support the communities in which we live and work. We invest our resources, share our knowledge and volunteer our time to help many charitable and community partners, including causes to better homelessness, fuel poverty, climate change and education. We also support our employees in a wide range of their own local charitable initiatives.
By nurturing our responsible culture – one committed to continuous improvement - we’re making our business a better business.
Culture and Leadership Behaviours
We’re a business driven by success – for our customers, our employees, and all our stakeholders. We root our drive for success in what we expect of our employees every day, and have developed a common set of values – our Leadership Behaviours – to guide us. We strive to live these behaviours in all of our actions and decisions:
Being one team, where everyone counts
Creating a positive environment, where people want to work
Putting our customers first, where they define excellence
Seizing responsibility, to deliver on our commitments
Seeing beyond our own goals, we keep people safe and care for society and the
environment.
…to build a sustainable future
Discounts
We offer our employees, along with family and friends, special offers on energy and related services like air duct cleaning, furnace care and more. We also extend preferred rates and discounts on other products & services available through corporate partnerships.
Diversity
Direct Energy is an equal opportunity employer and seeks out candidates from all backgrounds and status. Embracing diversity allows us to gain a competitive advantage in the global marketplace and in the communities we do business. Our success is not possible without a clear commitment to diversity and to living that commitment every day. Direct Energy has a specific Diversity and Inclusion policy and supports many initiatives such as diversity councils through sponsorship by senior leaders.
Employee Assistance Program & Wellness
We’re committed to providing employees with access to support that can help maintain a healthy lifestyle. This includes in-house wellness workshops and information, plus access to a 24-hour-a day, 365-days-a-year counseling and advisory service, or Employee Assistance Provider (EAP) for professional help on health, legal, financial and other issues. This service is provided by an external vendor, and is completely voluntary and confidential.
Engagement Survey
Every employee has a say. We use an outside service to survey our employees confidentially to tell us what they think – how they feel about their job, their team, our company, and more. All survey answers are anonymous. We share the compiled results and use our employees’ collective voice to drive company improvement and planning. The employee engagement survey (and customer satisfaction results too) are tied to management bonuses. The end result – our employee engagement survey scores are approaching best-in-class; a sure sign that our employees are very satisfied with our company as a great place to work.
Flexibility
We offer variable pay plans, paid leave plans, telework and remote working options, and even commuter support programs. Our efforts to offer our employees flexible work arrangements reflect our commitment to work-life balance, and have won awards such as recognition from the City of Houston for reducing travel congestion.
Getting Started
We share a special day with new employees. Our orientation and onboarding program includes local leadership meet and greet sessions which provide new hires with an informal face-to-face method of learning about the organization from local leadership. This casual forum is a great chance for new employees to get familiar and comfortable with their company and colleagues, right from the start. We also offer a new employee online course, with everything you’d want and need to get started right at your fingertips.
Health, Safety and Environment
We provide proactive workshops and information sessions to help employees be safe and healthy at work – and at home too. We’re committed to meeting and exceeding North American health and safety legislation standards, and are proud of our safety record.
Hotlines
We help our employees, including in times of community or weather distress. In the event of an emergency that may interrupt our building services, prevent safe transit, or other situations, employees can access round-the-clock information through our toll-free Emergency Hotline. This is part of our Business Continuity Plan to ensure employees’ safety.
Learning and Development
Our vision is to build a culture of constant learning. Applying leading practice models, processes and training ensures an employee’s skills and knowledge acquired – and work performed – is of the highest quality, which raises their level of performance. This spirit of constantly leading, and being innovative and creative contributes to an employee’s personal success and is the backbone of our strategic competitiveness.
Performance Management
The success of our business depends on our employees – their capabilities, skills and engagement. Direct Energy is committed to helping individuals develop to become more effective, recognize their potential and maximize their contribution to their role and our company. We encourage individuals to take responsibility for their development, and be an active partner in performance discussions and reviews. Our performance management program also encompasses merit increases and career planning.
Promotions and Progression
As a growth and performance-driven company, we’re committed to helping employees maximize their potential – through personal and professional learning, growth and development. In fact, up to 35% of our job placements are advancements from existing employees seeking career progression.
Rewards and Recognition
Extraordinary people are achieving great things at Direct Energy. To recognize and reward individuals and teams who have made outstanding contributions to our success, we have a number of awards programs – enterprise-wide, peer-recognition and divisional awards – each celebrating different aspects of employee talents, performance, innovation, caring and more. Our award programs are designed to encourage employees to be their best by achieving their business objectives while demonstrating our company’s values.
Succession Planning
We’re aggressive and proactive in identifying employees who have the potential to grow and assume key positions in the company. Developing the next generation of leaders is critical to our success as an organization.
